SciShield

SciShield is an online platform that enables users to easily organize and manage many high-level aspects of a research laboratory; including lab locations, personnel, chemical inventory, and safety documentation.  Tulane University utilizes SciShield to increase safety and compliance in laboratories without detracting researchers’ attention from their research.  SciShield provides users with digital access to safety compliance and regulatory documentation and materials on a single platform.

SciShield Guide

How to Get Started with SciShield

OEHS will create your lab group upon request.

  1. Log into SciShield (tulane.scishield.com) using your Tulane email credentials.
Complete the setup wizard to identify hazards in your lab.
  2. Add Lab Members under the Members tab.
Assign hazards to each person based on their work.
  3. Enter Hazardous Chemicals in the ChemTracker tab.
Include only unmixed hazardous chemicals (liquids, powders, compressed gases with one CAS number) or common commercial pre-mixtures of chemicals. Do not include non-hazardous materials, commercial products (paint, cleaning products, etc.), biological samples, or consumables like media or buffers. Ensure the inventory is updated annually.
  4. Store Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) for all hazardous chemicals in your lab.
Attach SDSs to chemical entries in SciShield or keep physical copies.
  5. Develop and Upload SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals.
Upload them to SciShield’s Documents tab. SOP Guide
  6. Create Lab Door Signs through the Spaces tab.  Print and post signs for lab entrances.  Door Signs Video Guide

Keeping your Lab Group Compliant - Annual Updates

OEHS can edit room assignments as needed.

  1. Chemical Inventory – confirm current inventory and remove chemicals with the ChemTracker Reconciliation tab.      Add any missing Chemical Containers using the Add Inventory Tab.
  2. Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) - ensure all hazardous chemicals in your lab have an SDS attached.
  3. Confirm Lab Hazards - PI of the Lab Group must Review and Submit lab hazard selections.
  4. Confirm Lab Members - Review Lab Members, their Designations, and Work Hazards.  Confirm List.
  5. Update and Upload Current SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) - Upload them to SciShield’s Documents tab.
  6. Update Lab Door Sign Information through the Spaces tab.  Print and post signs for lab entrances.
