The OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard requires employers to develop and maintain an Exposure Control Plan (ECP) to eliminate or minimize exposure to blood or other potentially infectious material. Tulane University's Exposure Control Plan can be found here: Tulane ECP.
Training
To receive credit and to remain in compliance with regulations, users must complete BOTH trainings annually and all tasks associated with the trainings. Both of these trainings must be completed between the hours of 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., M-F, and not during university closures. 1. Tulane Employee Specific Information for Bloodborne Pathogens – OEHS. This course contains Tulane-Specific requirements such as:
- Reading Tulane’s Exposure Control Plan; and
- Submitting a Hepatitis B Declination to the Tulane Living Well Occupational Health Clinic

- This course contains general information on bloodborne pathogens.

What To Do If You Have a Bloodborne Exposure:
For EMPLOYEE exposures:
- Wash exposed area with soap and water; if eye or mucous membrane contact, flush with sterile water or saline.
- Report the incident to your supervisor.
- Contact the Tulane Living Well Occupational Health Clinic at 504-988-6224.
- Contact the Employee Injury Call Center at (855) 433-9938.
- Complete the Blood & Bodily Fluid Exposure Report or the Needlestick & Sharp Object Injury Report.
- Report for medical evaluation (see directions below).
- Contact Tulane Workers Compensation at (504) 247-1716.
For STUDENT exposures:

- Report the incident to your professor or supervisor.

Where do I report for medical care?
You may seek medical attention in the same manner that it would be sought should any occupational injury occur (e.g., emergency room, physician's office, urgent care clinic). However, we recommend using the following guidelines based on the location where the occupational injury was sustained:

Employee Injuries at an Outside Healthcare Facility:
- Report to the emergency department at the medical facility where your injury occurred.
- Follow up with the Tulane University Living Well Occupational Health Clinic the next business day, if possible.
STUDENT Injuries at Tulane University &/ or Off Campus

Workers' Compensation Information:
As employees, you are covered under Workers' Compensation for an occupational injury. You should inform the treating healthcare provider that the injury is work-related and to bill accordingly. Employees should NOT show their personal insurance as this can complicate the billing issues. You should call the Workers' Compensation Manager by phone, (504) 247-1716 to verify benefits available.
