Tulane University is regulated under LAC 33:III Chapter 27 which encompasses the management of asbestos-containing materials in schools and state buildings.
To comply with LAC 33:III Chapter 27, Tulane University is required to maintain Asbestos Management Plans to identify, manage, and control asbestos-containing materials.
Asbestos Management Plans provide information on any response actions or activities that have taken place as a result of the inspection. Contact OEHS at oehs@tulane.edu if you would like to review the Asbestos Management Plan for your building.
What is Asbestos?
Asbestos are a group of six naturally occurring minerals. There are two distinct geologic groups of asbestos minerals: serpentine and amphiboles.
Chrysotile is the only serpentine mineral and is found in 95% of the asbestos-containing building materials.
Amosite, crocidolite, anthophyllite, tremolite, and actinolite comprise the amphibole group.
Asbestos may be found as a component in building materials such as: ceiling tiles, floor tiles, mastic, fireproofing, joint compound, plaster, spray-on insulation, roofing materials, dry wall, caulking, cementitious pipes and panels, counter tops, and pipe insulation.
Asbestos Training Requirements
Employees who have the potential to disturb or perform maintenance on potential asbestos-containing building materials are required to complete the online asbestos awareness training through Training Wave. Training should be completed initially upon-hire and annually thereafter. Asbestos awareness training informs employees of the risks associated with asbestos-containing materials and how to recognize these materials in the workplace.
Employees who perform asbestos-containing material repair tasks must ensure that they comply with EPA & OSHA's Operations and Maintenance (O&M) training requirements. Special O&M training is a 14-hour training course that is provided by an accredited and licensed training organization.
Disturbance/Removal of ACM
Contact OEHS during the planning phase of construction projects to ensure that the Asbestos Management Plans are reviewed for asbestos-containing materials that may be disturbed as a result of the project. Additional sampling may be required with extensive renovation projects or demolition.
For demolition or renovation projects where the presence of regulated asbestos is confirmed by OEHS, the project lead or designee is required to submit the AAC-2(a): Asbestos Demolition & Renovation Notification Form to LDEQ at least 10 days before work commences.
For demolition or renovation projects where no regulated asbestos-containing materials will be disturbed, the project lead or designee is required to submit the AAC-2(b) Form to LDEQ at least 5 working days before work commences.
Asbestos Management Guidelines have been created by OEHS to support Campus Services with managing asbestos containing materials during construction and renovation activities. The guidelines ensure compliance with federal, state, and local requirements.
